The history of the Dnipro Metro began in 1995 with the opening of its first line, following years of construction that started during the Soviet era. Designed to serve the city's industrial districts, the network remained one of the smallest metro systems in Europe for many years. Recent extensions have added new stations to improve connections with the city center, making the metro a more important part of Dnipro's public transport network.
