The Sofia Metro is the first and only underground railway system in Bulgaria. Construction began in the late 1970s, but the project faced many delays before the first section finally opened on January 28, 1998, between Slivnitsa and Konstantin Velichkov, with five stations and 6.5 km of track. The network gradually expanded through the city center and residential areas, reaching Sofia Airport in 2015. A third line opened in 2020, further improving connections across the Bulgarian capital. Today, the Sofia Metro plays a key role in the city's public transport system, with several lines serving central districts and the surrounding areas.
