The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system opened on 11 September 1972, creating a fast rail connection between San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area. Designed to reduce traffic congestion, the network serves major cities including Oakland, Berkeley and San Jose, as well as San Francisco International Airport. Today, BART is one of the largest and most important rapid transit systems in the United States.
