Public transportation in Romania plays an important role in connecting cities and regions across the country. Trains, buses, trams, and trolleybuses are widely used, while urban rail systems serve the largest metropolitan areas. Romania currently has one city with a metro system: Bucharest. Opened in 1979, the Bucharest Metro has expanded into a modern network that carries hundreds of thousands of passengers every day. It is complemented by an extensive tram and bus network, making it the backbone of public transportation in the Romanian capital.
